Holiday mixers and contests -Ugly Christmas Sweater Party & Santa Beard (weekly game/contest) Bonus 2

Since this will be the last contest/activity Holiday post for the year, we are giving you 2 and will see you next year with more Holiday games/contest posts..

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party

Host a Christmas or holiday themed party where all the guests come wearing the most hideous Christmas sweaters they can find. Guests can choose a winner by voting for the tackiest sweater.

Santa beard

Make a big bowl of cotton balls and get a container of Vaseline. Put some Vaseline on the chins of each member of each team (ideally, 2 teams of about 5 people each).

The first players in line run to the bowl of cotton balls and stick their chins in, trying to get as many to stick to the Vaseline as possible. They run to the back of their line, so the next players can have a turn.

When everyone on a team has a beard, that team wins.

As with the other game, be sure to take lots of pictures of everyone wearing their Santa beards. Also have plenty of towels and water to get the Vaseline off.

Holiday mixers and contests - Kiss it Relay (weekly game/contest)

Kiss it Relay

Place a large bowl of Hersey's kisses on a table.

Divide your group into two teams and have them line up around 10-15 feet away from the table.

Give the first people in the row mittens that are slightly larger than they would ever need.

On the mark of "Go", the first player of each team runs to the table (with their mittens on), takes a Hershey's kiss out from the bowl and tries unwrapping it with the large mittens.

After they unwrap it they have to run down and pop it into the next person's mouth.

The next person takes the mittens and runs to the bowl to do the same.

Whoever finishes first is the winner!

Once all done, hang everyone's tree up and have everyone judge for the best looking tree.

Holiday mixers and contests - Pictionary Of Carols (weekly game/contest)

Pictionary Of Carols

  1. Get an oversized tablet of paper and an easel. Don’t forget a thick marker!
  2. Write the names of Christmas carols on individual strips of paper and put them in a Santa hat.
  3. Divide your guests into teams. You may use as many teams as you want, but remember you don’t want those not guessing to be bored, so limit your number of teams. Two to four teams seems to work the best.
  4. One person starts by picking a paper out of the hat. This person does not show this paper to anyone but begins drawing what he/she believes depicts the carol in question while the rest of his/her team members begin guessing.
  5. Someone on another team is the time keeper.
  6. The person has one minute to draw. If his team does not guess it in the designated time. All the other teams get one guess. If another team gets it, they get the points.
  7. Points are allotted for correct guesses. You designate the point structure.
Tips:

  • Make sure the easel is set up so that all guests can see what is being drawn from wherever they are seated.
  • A possible point system might be 5 points if your team guesses in 1 minute, 1 point if another team guesses it afterwards

How do I connect my computer to my Mixer or Speakers (Virtual DJ & No Controller)

How do I connect my computer to my Mixer or Speakers

See the cords below, in some cases when you use virtual DJ you need this cord and then 2 of the splitters below (3rd image). You also need to set your software. In Virtual DJ under sound card in the sound setup tab of settings select Mono separated. Above that under outputs select, Deck 1: left chan/ Deck 2 right chan

You need the cord above first to get standard sound from your (1/8 in)headphone jack or line out jack to the back inputs (RCA) of your mixer. This will allow you to connect a SINGLE stereo channel to your mixer. This channel can be used for windows media player, winamp, real player, or whatever music software you use. If you can hear it through headphones plugged into the jack then this cable when connected correctly to your mixer will work fine.

Now if you have a DJ software program that has 2 players or more, both players will play through this one channel unless you SPLIT the signal by using (2) TWO of the cords below. You will also have to set the program you are using to split the outgoing sound from one channel stereo to two channel mono (that's player 1 to the left or right side and player 2 to the left or right side). when you hook it up this way and the channels are on the wrong side just flip the RCA Cable connections so the players will play in the channels you need.

There are also many different and very cheap usb external sound cards avail on the market that come in many different shapes, sizes, and outputs & Inputs so choose wisely. These usb sound cards allow you to independently control a different output or set of outputs.

Holiday mixers and contests - What’s In Your Stocking? (weekly game/contest)

What’s In Your Stocking?

  1. Take a soft Christmas stocking and fill it with holiday items. Guests will need to feel the items from the outside of the stocking, so make sure it is one that is “squishy” such as a knit or felt.
  2. Use items such as candy cane, glass ball ornament, pine cone, candle, jingle bell, mitten, scotch tape, ribbon, small square of wrapping paper, holly, etc.
  3. Count the number of objects you have.
  4. Tie the stocking closed on the top to prevent peeking!
  5. During the party, pass the stocking around the room and give everyone a piece of paper.
  6. Tell your guests how many objects are in the stocking and have them write down all of their guesses.
  7. Have them pass their paper to the person on their left.
  8. Pull out the objects one by one.
  9. After you are finished, have guests call out funny answers that people made.
  10. The guest with the most correct is the winner!

Tips:
  • You can use large thermal socks if you don’t have a knit or felt Christmas stocking to use.
  • Do a test first. Put the objects in the stocking and make sure after feeling, that you can mostly guess the objects are.
  • Have a couple small prizes handy for the winner!

Are Bar/Bat Mitzvahs really that tough?

Are Bar/Bat Mitzvahs really that tough?

Many disc jockeys think that a Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a tougher gig than a wedding. Why is this you might ask? I thought long and hard about this and I have come up with a couple theories.

First, what makes these parties difficult is not the candle lighting ceremony or cavalcade of kiddy activities, but rather the idea you may be fighting an inflated expectation. It's not uncommon for a Bar Mitzvah mom to spend years planning for this day. Why, was that matter, some moms, it seems, set thinking of a theme and color scheme in the Maternity Ward 13 years before. If you're playing that party over and over in your head for years, your mind’s eye will turn any party into something unbelievably outrageous and to DJ, unbelievably unobtainable.

Secondly, chances are the girl or boy celebrating this special day may have just attended 10 Other Bar/Bat Mitzvahs recently, with entertainment ranging from $4,000 Orchestras to a $2,000 disc jockey company, complete with 2 DJs, 6 dancers, 3 roadies, $10,000 in lighting, $300 in hawaiian leis, glow sticks and blow up instruments. And here you are with your microphone and a couple of Lights ready to do battle! But it can be done. Here's how.

Forget about the unavoidable DJ comparisons, inflated expectations, and even the fact your client may have shelled out as much as $30,000 for this day. Undo pressure on yourself won't help. Turn that anxiety into confidence. Walk into that party ready to give your best performance, regardless of the hurdles.

Know your stuff! While most Bar/Bat Mitzvahs will require the blessing (Motzi), some may not include the introduction of the parents and candle lighting ceremony. Here's what you need to know:

INTRODUCTIONS: Usually after cocktail hour, and before the blessing, the disc jockey will introduce the parents and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah into the room just like you would for the bridal party introductions. Sometimes the brothers and sisters, and even grandparents, will be asked to be included in the introductions.

BLESSING (MOTZI) (pronounced Ha-Moat-sea): Usually done by either the boy's grandfather or rabbi, it is traditionally done at the beginning of the party when everyone is seated. The DJ is usually required to get everyone's attention and introduce whoever is to perform the blessing.

CANDLE LIGHTING CEREMONY: Usually happens right after the blessing, but can take place after dinner. Your best bet is to check with your client. The ceremony requires members of the boy's family, such as grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins, as well as close friends light one of 12 candles on the cake. The 13th and 14th candle or designated for the boy's parents and the Bar/Bat Mitzvah themself. Each candle can be lit by one, two, and even a whole group of people. Most light one candle. Other than the 13th and 14th candle, it's generally thought the order represent ascending order of closeness to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Friends of the family, aunts and uncles, are generally the first to light candles, while grandparents, brothers, sisters, and best friends until the end. Background music can be a constant Loop of Hava Nagila, a mixture of We are family, through the years, and that's what friends are for, or even playing of a specific song For each lit candle. Check with your client with their preference.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Since this is an event celebrating the boy or girl's 13th birthday, candle lighting ceremony is usually followed up with a chorus of Happy Birthday or happy Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Once that is done having blow out the candles. if the child's birthday was months back you may not want to sing Happy Birthday, so please check with your client.

OPENING HORA: Right after Happy Birthday have everyone come to the dance floor in a circle with the Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the middle. Have the Bar/Bat Mitzvah take a seat and a chair and have four to five strong people lift them in the air while you play Hava Nagila.

PARENT DANCE: The Bar/Bat Mitzvah child may want to dance with their mother or father. A good traditional song would be “Sunrise Sunset”.

That's it! Now your client may delete some formalities, rearrange the order, or even decide to spread things out, but rest assured, there are no other formalities. Once you've gotten through the formalities, the party turns into a mixture of an 8th grade dance and a wedding reception; Lots of music and activities for the kids, mixed in with some music for the adults. Activities such as Coke and Pepsi, a Freeze Dance, Limbo, chicken dance, and line dances are proven winners at a Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

Remember, your great personality can make up for a lot of those frills offered by other Bar/Bat Mitzvah DJs. By familiarizing yourself with the simple formalities, and by understanding what your client is expecting of you, can turn yourself into a great Bar/Bat Mitzvah DJ.
